Help with Walnut Burl Coring

    I have a somewhat large walnut burl cap (18" x 20" x 8") and was wondering if anyone with a bowl coring system would help me cut a set of nested bowl blanks to make the most of the piece?

    I would recommend band sawing the best bowl blank you can get from that and maybe even turning a good tenon on it. Then you will have a better idea about what could be accomplished with coring. Most of us core with a Oneway or Woodcut and both systems are somewhat limited in what can be done as far as bowl shape and size. There are some really good turners out there that can make sets with 10+ bowls using a McNaughton tool set, but that is unlikely to find.

    I use a McNaughton system and have recently gotten 4 bowls out of a blank but that was left thick for drying. If you wanted to make it thinner I think I could get 6 bowls from a good size blank. 

    Dale uses the McNaughton and is much better at it than me. Maybe bring it to a Cascade open shop and see if he can help.
