I was approached by a woman at a market recently wishing to divest herself of her late husband's wood collection. Lots of turning stock and reclaimed lumber. From the wife:

The collection includes apple, birch, fir, holly, fruit woods, and many other kinds -- some of which are labelled, and some are not. There are various sizes of branches and also lots of small bits.

There is an extensive collection of coffee wood which we collected in Hawaii, South Africa, Kenya and Australia. Phil had a dream of someone turning coffee spoons, coffee cups, and/or assembling coffee trays from this unique wood.

The reclaimed lumber includes wood Phil reclaimed through hand demolition from the Presidio of San Francisco, Treasure Island in the Bay area, the Boston University Boathouse, some sites in Portland, the University of Michigan (our joint alma mater), and almost anywhere else where Phil's travels took him and he found lovely salvaged wood.

And there are some "cookies" from stumps, including at least one from a Monterey Cyprus blowdown in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

I will have an "open driveway/garage" event on Saturday October 29 from 10 am - 4 pm where you can come and inspect the wood, and take what you want. I am not going to haggle over cost, but if anyone wants to pay a fair price or even a token amount, that would be appreciated given the time and money Phil invested in assembling this collection!

If needed, I will also be available on Sunday October 30th from 1:30-4:30 pm; I would very much like to have all this wood removed by then. Anything that is left at that point will be offered to the Rebuilding Center (which may not be interested) or trashed, and I'd prefer the wood that was collected with a lot of love go to good homes/organizations instead!

So please come to 2814 SW Carolina St., Portland, 97239 during those hours. There is no need to RSVP. You are also welcome to forward this with discretion to woodworking friends of yours.
